Throwing things into landfill is costly and has no financial benefit. The European Union's circular economy package recognises the highest value of resources often considered to be waste. Accordingly, it has increased the targets for recycling of all waste and directed that all Member States will have to collect organic waste separately by 31 December 2023. This organic waste must either composted or pass through an anaerobic digester. It is not to be incinerated. It is expected that the way that the circular economy package deals with waste, will create an additional 50,000 jobs in the organic waste sector and increase the competitiveness of Europe.
