Well, we knew compost was popular, but wow! Residents of Calgary in Canada, rushed to the town's Compost Giveaway on Saturday. Now in its second year, the program boasted literal lines of cars waiting patiently to load up.
Local News Reporter, Noel Edey, writes,"Waste and Recycling Manager Fabrizio Bertolo estimates there were about 500 vehicles that passed through the gates and each were entitled to receive about 30 kg of the nutrient-rich compost."
Residents of Calary are required to separate their food waste, and can participate in a Green Cart program, donating their food scraps alongside their garden clippings for weekly council kerb-side collection. The local council decided to extend the benefits of their labour to local residents by offering free compost giveaways.
"It was a great success," says Bertolo."It's getting more and more popular and we love to show people what we are doing with the organics. We want to thank them for using their green carts and for diverting all organic material from the landfill so we can turn it into great compost and give it back to them."
So if you've ever wondered if compost from Council kerb-side collection is in demand... well, you have your answer!
